May 29 th – 140 Audubon students (8 th -11 th grades), staff, and volunteers went outside of
Corning. They helped a farmstead that was destroyed. This involved moving debris from
pastureland to be cleared. Some students went to Crescent to assist in rebuilding a
fence for a farm that was also affected by the storms.
On all the sites students realized the impact these storms had on the homes and farms
they ripped through. Students were aware they were not only picking up debris but
looking for items that are treasured by the family. At the Wolf farm on Wednesday,
students found the owners retired FFA jacket, as well as family pictures, report cards,
and other items that could never be replaced. Our students were able to talk to those
they helped and truly realized the impact that they had on them.
The Audubon Community has done a community service day the past several years on
the last day. This year it was needed in our surrounding communities. Our students
were humbled by these experiences and truly saw the value of volunteering. At one
home as our group was leaving, the homeowner thanked the students with tears in her
eyes and said, “I’ve always been one to help and give back, I volunteer whenever and
wherever help is needed. Now it is my turn. I need help, and here you are!” She
encouraged students to “have a servant heart because you never know when you will
be the one that needs help.”
The Audubon FFA Chapter donated to GoServ Global with items to be used on their
relief trailer. Chapter members purchased a new chainsaw, grease, extra chains, oil,
towels, gloves, gas, and ear protection headsets.
These areas will need help for months to come. Students urge everyone to go and
volunteer. The towns have designated programs to assist those wanting to help.
GoServ Global is also a great avenue to get connected with a place in need. Please
reach out to FFA Advisor, Mrs. Brittany Elmquist if you have any questions.
